Empowering Futures: The Impact of the 2022 Giving Challenge on Take Stock Manatee Scholars

Empowering Futures

After enduring what felt like an endless period of remote learning, schools nationwide once again buzzed with the energy of face-to-face education in the 2021-2022 school year. However, for students enrolled in the Take Stock program in Manatee County, the return to in-person classes brought with it a wave of uncertainty about their futures. Little did they know, their path was on the brink of illumination, thanks to the remarkable generosity of donors during the much-anticipated 2022 Giving Challenge.

As students navigated the transition from remote learning to in-person classes, they encountered many obstacles, compounded by a surge in COVID-related cases as September approached. Nearly 700 students in Manatee County grappled with COVID-related symptoms, worsening the economic hardships, academic challenges, and emotional stress faced by many Take Stock-Manatee students.

"Be The One"

Despite the challenges confronting students district-wide, Take Stock-Manatee scholars drew strength from the unwavering support of their mentors and the dedicated staff of Take Stock in Children – Manatee. “My mentor has been my guiding light, helping me navigate through these challenging times and always believing in me,said one Take Stock student. With this support system in place, they forged ahead, determined in their pursuit of a brighter future. The organization played a pivotal role by providing essential aid, such as financial assistance and mentorship, which proved invaluable in guiding them through these tumultuous times.

Behind these students stood a community of donors whose contributions fueled their aspirations. “The generosity of donors has been life-changing for me,” remarked another Take Stock student. Their support extended beyond scholarships and mentorship, resonating deeply with these young individuals and empowering them to push forward in their educational endeavors, breaking free from the cycle of poverty.

With 954 scholarships awarded and nearly a 99% high school graduation rate, Take Stock in Children – Manatee’s impact is undeniable. Cassidee’s journey exemplifies this transformation. Upon joining the program in April 2019, she immersed herself in extracurricular activities like FFA and film clubs, expressing a passion for film by June 2020. Throughout high school, Cassidee’s dedication was evident in her exemplary grades and active involvement in clubs.

Despite facing challenges in transitioning to post-secondary education, including financial aid challenges, Cassidee continued to excel academically, earning recognition for her outstanding GPA in fall 2022. Her commitment to theater and film remained strong as she pursued work-study opportunities.

Facing obstacles in securing financial assistance for her Florida prepaid charges, Cassidee received a laptop through the program’s support, illustrating its commitment to students in need. “Receiving a laptop made a huge difference in my education, allowing me to access resources and complete assignments effectively,” Cassidee shared. Her journey showcases the resilience of Take Stock in Children scholars, who persevere in pursuing their dreams, supported by donors’ belief in their potential.

As the annual Giving Challenge approaches, continued support is crucial. “The support of donors has transformed my life. I urge everyone to contribute and help other students like me achieve their dreams,” a Take Stock scholar shared at graduation. While the challenges brought by the pandemic persist, so does the potential for positive change. Donors have the power to make a real difference in the lives of those most in need by rallying behind organizations like Take Stock in Children – Manatee.
